Vintage Sandow Chest Expander

There are lots of vintage chest expanders out there (Whiteley, etc), but by far, Sandow's appliances are my favorite of the bunch. Nice, quality made apparatus.

Galen Gough, The World's Miracle Strongman!

A must read for those interested in Oldtime Strongmen!

Greg Travis, editor-in-chief of the Ben- ton, Kentucky Tribune Courier has producd a fascinating biog- raphy of professional strongman Galen Gough and we are grate ful to Mr. Travis for allowing us to excerpt the following pas- sages There is, however, much more to the story of this strong- man, movie star, preacher, and artist than can be told here. Gough, like most professional strongmen, exaggerated many of his claims, but his life was anything but boring.

The term "rare" gets thrown around a lot when it comes to vintage barbells.
That isn't always the case.
In this case, I think "rare" can be used to describe what I have here.
This is a Jackson Globe Barbell, made by Andy Jackson in Springfield, NJ.
My friend (and friend of Andy's) Carl Linich owned this bell for over 30 years.
It's been handed down to me, and I will keep it safe for a few more decades (God willing).

Our friend Bob Hornick in TX, owns one of these, and there may be one more out there that we know about. Each globe say's "Andrew Jackson Springfield, NJ"

One of my cherished barbells.

Sandow Barbell??

When we toured York Barbell and Museum a few years back, we were told that this barbell was once owned by Eugen Sandow. Not sure if it was ever confirmed, but it's a nice looking bell nonetheless!

The annual AOBS dinner is rapidly approaching (OCT 5th Newark, NJ). Ken Patera and Mike Katz will be honored this year. A well deserved honor for both men!

A nice pair of Jackson Globe 25 pounders. I have sets of 25's up to 70's.
Nice pieces of Iron Game Memorabilia!

The Holy Grail of the Iron Game books (IMO). Here's a nice review from the author's nephew from Amazon.

"This two volume set is a one of a kind for both collection and historic information. My Uncle Leo put years of knowledge into these books with direct correspondence to notable strong men and weight lifters all over the world. This account of strong men history, and history of weight lifting and body building is unparalleled."

It took me many years to find this set. There are copies on both eBay and Amazon now, with $380.00 being the best price for a mint set of the books. A great deal. (Not my auction).
Welcome to yet another Iron Game Blog. I will do my best to update it weekly.
Thanks for looking. I love this old pic of Hermann Goerner. If you can find his book "Goerner the Mighty" by Edgar Mueller, do yourself a favor and pick it up. An old classic.
